Living on the Slopes in Prince George
Winter in Prince George isn’t something you endure, it’s something you embrace. With quick access to both downhill and cross-country skiing, the region offers a winter lifestyle that’s active, affordable, and deeply connected to the outdoors. Families, beginners, casual skiers, and high-performance athletes all find options that fit their style, making skiing here less of a special occasion and more of a weekly routine.
For downhill skiers, Purden Ski Village is the closest and most popular local hill. Just 60 km east of Prince George, it offers over 1,100 vertical feet of terrain, reliable snowfall, and a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere. Two hours south, Troll Ski Resort in the Quesnel Highlands is known for its long, steady fall-line runs, deep snowpack, and old-school mountain charm, a favourite for skiers looking for a relaxed and uncrowded experience.
And then there's Powder King Mountain Resort, located roughly 2.5 hours north near Mackenzie, often called the “Whistler of the North” for its legendary snowfall. Powder King consistently receives some of the deepest snow in the province and offers over 850 acres of terrain with a true mountain experience: glades, bowls, natural terrain features, and a culture built around big-snow skiing rather than resort frills. For many residents, Powder King is the ultimate weekend trip, a guaranteed powder fix that keeps advanced skiers coming back season after season.
Cross-country skiers have one of the best Nordic facilities in Canada right at their doorstep. Otway Nordic Ski Centre, only 10 minutes from downtown, features over 55 km of expertly groomed trails, night skiing, a biathlon range, and a thriving community driven by the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club. For those who prefer quieter, ungroomed routes, areas like Pidherny, Forests for the World, and Tabor Mountain provide peaceful, forested terrain perfect for classic skiing or touring.
Prince George makes skiing almost effortless. You can leave work at 5:00 and be skiing under the lights at Otway 15 minutes later, or load up early on a Saturday and be in fresh tracks at Purden or Powder King before most people have finished their morning coffee. Winter here isn’t a season to survive, it’s one of the biggest reasons people fall in love with northern living.
